About Equation Collaborative
In April 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched a pilot project to address rising food insecurity by working alongside school districts to augment school nutrition programs with boxes of nutrient rich foods for students and their families. With seed funding from a generous foundation sponsor, the project evolved into +BOX, a program that donated over 8,500 boxes with over 35,000 servings of fresh, healthy, and nutritious foods to food insecure students and families in collaboration with three different school districts by the end of 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been an awakening that food insecurity and a host of other social imbalances are more acute than ever, and there are many who need help to provide for themselves and their families, to have enough food, to benefit from educational opportunities, to live and work in a clean and safe environment, and to access other essential resources. Existing public and community support services often lack sufficient capacity to address these overwhelming needs.
Equation Collaborative was founded to strengthen communities by creating and managing programs that work alongside community partners to increase capacity, access, and opportunity. Equation Collaborative empowers us to manage and grow +BOX to provide essential nutrition to as many food insecure families as possible, and provides us the opportunity to work with community partners to create shared solutions that help equalize opportunities for healthy and dignified lives.
“From increased poverty and food insecurity, to growing water stress and accelerated environmental damage, it is a clear and increasingly present threat to human dignity.”
Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
